中国製のスーパーコンピュータ天河-1Aが世界一になる可能性

天津の国家超級計算中心にある中国製のスーパーコンピュータ天河-1Aがパフォーマンスで世界一になる可能性があり、アメリカを焼きもきさせている。天河-1Aはビデオゲームに一般的に使われているNvidiaのグラフィック・チップと普通のインテルのマイクロプロセッサを利用したもので最高2.5ペタフロップの能力を持つ。これは2年に一回発表される世界最速500スーパーコンピュータのランキングで一位のオークリッジ国立研究所のジャガーJaguarより性能で40%上回っている。しかし中国の躍進は、過去にも500ランキング中24個のシステムがランキング入りし、Nebulaeが2位に位置するなどまったく予想されていなかったというわけではない。またこのシステムがNvidiaとインテルのチップを使っていると言っても、中のコミュニケーション・チップは中国国産で、更にマイクロプロセッサも中国独自のものを開発中である。また天河-1Aはオープンアクセス方式を取っているため大規模計算を中国国外からアクセスして行うことができる。

A newly built supercomputer in China appears poised to take the world performance lead, another sign of the country's growing technological prowess that is likely to set off alarms about U.S. competitiveness and national security. The system was designed by China's National University of Defense Technology and is housed at the National Supercomputing Center in the city of Tianjin. It is part of a new breed that exploits graphics chips more commonly used in playing videogames―supplied by Nvidia Corp.―as well as standard microprocessors from Intel Corp.
