音で物体の形態を変化させるサイマティックス
増幅したサイン波によってコーンスターチと水を混ぜた液体の表面上に模様を浮き上がらせるような現象を研究する学問がサイマティックスCymatics。モーダル現象とも呼ばれるサイマティックスは音によって物体の形態を変化させるもので，いろいろな応用が考えられている。例えばイルカの音声パターンをサイマティックスでビジュアル化してイルカ同士のコミュニケーションに使われる単語を理解するのに役立たせたり，芸術分野への応用といった例など。日本でも児玉幸子＋竹野美奈子による「ProTRude, flow」のような作品がこれに当たるかもしれない。またサイマティックスは世界中の人々がDIYで作っており，サイマティックスのコミュニティーが作られているらしい。ただサイマティックスに対する研究はまだ浅く，音の物体に対する影響は宇宙の形成まで関わってくる可能性があるなど興味尽きない分野といえるだろう。
