山谷再開発でシックな六本木に様変わりか
荒川区と台東区にまたがるドヤ街で知られる山谷地区が再開発で，さらに外国人観光客を呼び込みそうだ。ある人は再開発によって山谷がチープに夜を過ごせる安価版の六本木になるかもしれないと予測している。現在でも14のゲストハウスが積極的に安く日本滞在をしたい外国人の需要に応えており，客は素泊まり1泊約2000円で済ませることができる。これらのゲストハウスは一日300人以上の観光客を迎え入れており，その4割をヨーロッパ人が占めているという。
The Sanya district of Tokyo is undergoing redevelopment that some observers say is turning one of Japan's biggest ghettos into an inexpensive version of Roppongi, the central-area hot spot that is a nighttime hangout for foreigners. Low-cost guesthouses catering to foreign visitors and chic bars are now springing up in Sanya, an area straddling Arakawa and Taito wards known for decrepit accommodations patronized mainly by day laborers. With an increasing number of older workers quitting their jobs and leaving Sanya, the void is being filled by foreign visitors trying to tour Tokyo on the cheap.
