石頭湯Stone Soupのオリジナルはフランス

ストーン・スープの話は各国にあってそれぞれのバージョンで微妙に内容に違いがある。better gmailの作者でLifehackerのライターであるGina TrapaniもWeb Directions North conferenceでのプレゼンでストーン・スープの話をオープンソース開発モデルのメタファーとして取り上げていた。中国でもストーン・スープの話は石頭湯としてかなり有名だ。ただアメリカではなにも食事の材料がないところからスープの材料を全部取りそろえてしまう主人公がトラベラーなのに対して、中国では和尚が主人公になっているのが面白い。この話のオリジナルはフランスに伝わっていた民間寓話で1947年に最初に発表されたという。

The story of Stone Soup is widely recognized as a metaphor for the open source development model, where volunteers contribute time and code and expertise to community software projects that are free and open to everyone to use. Open source development is alive and well today, especially around the Firefox web browser. I don't work for Mozilla or Google, but earlier last year I unexpectedly found myself leading a volunteer software project I wound up calling Better Gmail.
