インドの九九Vedic math

インドの生徒が九九に強いのはよく知られていることだけれども，名門校に入学するための激しい競争に勝つためインドの受験生はVedic mathを習っている。やり方は，85×85ならば，最後が5ならいつも25をとっておく。そして8に1を足したものに8を掛けると72となるから答えは7225となる。Vedic mathはサンスクリット古典ヴェーダの頌歌から取られたとされているが，現代に取り入れられたのはヒンドゥーの預言者ティルタジ・マハラジャTirthaji Maharajaの没後1965年に彼のVedic mathに関する本が出されてからという。彼は古典から16の公式を取り上げたが，元のサンクリット文が曖昧なことから，いかようにも解釈ができるので異議の出るところだ。インドの教師が教えている九九がVedic mathだとはあまり認識されてないらしいが，多かれ少なかれインドの九九がVedic mathの影響を受けているのはまちがいない。

Vedic mathematics was ushered into the modern age by a Hindu seer called Tirthaji Maharaja, after his book on the subject was published posthumously in 1965. He culled 16 formulas from ancient scriptures. Whether the formulas were indeed written centuries ago or were largely partisan interpretations of obscure Sanskrit text is a matter of academic debate.
