The long awaited embedding of a browser in Second Life is here with the recent release of version 1.10. The renderer, uBrowser a 3D browser built on the Mozilla Gecko engine, is accessible through an LSL (Second Life's scripting language) call aptly named llHTTPRequest.

He started programming, and pretty soon he'd created Tringo -- an intriguing fusion of bingo and Tetris. As with Tetris, you have to take an oncoming stream of oddly shaped blocks and fit them together so they disappear. The difference is that in Tringo, you lay down the bricks one by one on a bingo-like grid, and amass points when you make larger masses of bricks vanish. Quirk designed Tringo as a group game: Second Life players would show up at someone's house, sit in a floating Tringo chair with a Tringo card in front of them, and compete to see who could get the biggest score.

Virtual worlds may end up playing an even more sweeping role -- as far more intuitive portals into the vast resources of the entire Internet than today's World Wide Web. Some tech thinkers suggest Second Life could even challenge Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT ) Windows operating system as a way to more easily create entertainment and business software and services. "This is why I think Microsoft needs to pay deep attention to it," Robert Scoble, Microsoft's best-known blogger, recently wrote.
