米軍が昆虫型ロボット研究に着手
米軍は昆虫型ロボットMAVsの研究に着手しており，将来は生命の危険を冒さずに搭載したカメラで敵情を視察したり，化学薬品や爆薬を積んで室内にいるテロリストなどを襲撃するといったより危険な任務が行えるようになる。研究はオハイオ州のデイトン市にあるライト・パターソン空軍基地Wright-Patterson Air Force Baseで実施され現在は設計段階にある。計画ではまず2015年に鳥型ロボットを作り，2030年にMAVsを出す予定となっている。MAVsは弾性のある材料からなる羽ばたく翼で飛行し，壁にぶつかっても昆虫のように跳ね返ってそのまま飛行継続が可能。専門家は技術開発にはまだ大きな障害があるがこの小型で精密度を要求するテクノロジーは未来の趨勢であるとしている。

"This type of technology is really the wave of the future," Thompson said. "More and more military research is going into things that are small, that are precise and that are extremely focused on particular types of missions or activities."
