beta friendfeedが公開
デザインを一新したbeta friendfeedが公開された。いままでもgreasemonkeyを使うことでfriendをグループ化することができたがbeta friendfeedではFriend Listsとして最初からグループ化ができるようになった。またいままではブログのフィードを複数取り込んでいても、ひとつのブログとしてしか扱われなかったのが各自独立して扱われるようになった点が大きな進歩といえる。またFriend ListsではFake Followingが可能になり、赤の他人からフォローされた場合に礼儀でフォローし返したとしても実際にはそのfriendからの更新情報を取得しないで済みノイズが減ることになる。また写真のアップロード機能も加わり、flickrなどのサービスを利用していなくとも自分のハードディスクから直接アップロードが可能になる。こうした機能はbookmarkとあわせてfriendfeedがただ単に他のサービスをアグリゲートするだけのツールとしてではなくbookmarkやpictureをホストするサービスとして使えることを意味する。実際やり始めれば分かるがfriendfeedを使い始めたことでdel.icio.usを使う機会が減ったユーザーもいてますますfriendfeedへの一本化が進む気がする。ただ今回のbeta friendfeedではroomのリストや検索がサポートされておらず依然としてgoogleなど外部の検索サービスを使うしかない状態に留まっている。
The Friend Lists also support "Fake Following" -a seemingly unintuitive feature that allows users to look like they're following their friends without actually getting their updates. Users often expect to have their "Follows" reciprocated by their peers, and a failure to do so can lead to bruised egos. But indiscriminate following comes with a price too, as it ultimately leads to an unmanageable amount of noise (and stories you might not care about). Fake Following manages to skirt the issue with a digital white lie, and is a feature Twitter (which has a similar system) should offer too.
One of the big new features is the inclusion of photos. You can now post a photo, not just text or a link. Previously the service would pick up photos from some items like from certain news outlets or places like Flickr, but if you found it on an unsupported site it would just show up as a big link. You can now simply upload a shot straight from your hard drive or via URL and it will show up. This could easily be the first step for other FriendFeed-hosted media types like audio clips and videos.
