Google Earth/Second Lifeマッシュアップの実現近い

google earth pluginでブラウザ内でgearthを見ることができるようになったけれども、このpluginの登場でGoogle Earth/Second Lifeのマッシュアップの実現に一歩近づいた。ブラウザの中のgoogle earth上でアバターが動き回ることになる。セカンドライフのプリムを今はオープンとなっているいくつかのセカンドライフ･クライアントを使ってすばやくcolladaファイルに変換し、それをgoogle earthに読み込ませることで可能になる。実際プリムなしで数人のアバターを置くことは比較的簡単で、1ヶ月もしないうちに動作は遅くともちゃんと動くプロトタイプを誰かが作ってしまうはずだ。

The one mashup some people will clamor for is the Google Earth / Second Life one. And I think it would be much easier now, as long as you could quickly convert SL prims (using some of the now-open client) into Collada and let GE reload those. I give it a month before someone shows a very-slow-but-working prototype. Getting the avatars to work without the prims would be a bit easier, actually, except for the server to handle the coordination and hide latency. Just putting a dozen avatars in the world would be pretty simple. But don't try a thousand or more unless you're a glutton for punishment.
