個人書籍データベースを整理できるGuruLib
本棚をメタファーに、個人書籍データベースを整理できるGuruLib。個人書籍データベースを構築するのに面倒なのがいちいちデータをひとりで入力しなければならないこと。doubanなどのオンライン・サービスにしても一番最初に書籍を登録するときは入力の必要がある。公立図書館やamazonから書籍データを取ってくることが出来れば便利にちがいない。GuruLibではz39.50という図書館ネットワーク・アクセス・プロトコルを通じてカタログ・データを取ってくることが出来るほかに本のバーコードを入力するだけでカバー写真をウェブから探し出してきてくれる機能があったり、レーティングや書評を書いて他のユーザーと共有することも可能という。

GuruLib can access over 530 public libraries around the world to collect cataloging information about hard to find books, movie, music, games and software. If your local library support Z39.50 protocol, GuruLib can search it.
Retreives and displays information from UPC or ISBN
Scan the UPC or ISBN using a barcode reader, webcam or manually type in, Gurulib will fetch information including the image of the front cover from several online resources.
Write your book or movie review and share with others
GuruLib allows you to rate the books and write your reviews. Share your review with others and they can comment on your review.
從Basic、dBase II/III、HyperCard、一直到FileMaker和Delicious Library等程式語言或應用軟體，自己建藏書資料庫最大的問題，一來在於輸入麻煩，從書名到日期、頁數等等十分瑣碎，更經常令人半途而廢的原因，則是老覺得自己在重複做別人做過的事情；明明圖書館都有書卡、後來的Amazon.com或博客來網站也有許多中英書籍資料，自己拼命輸入只是多此一舉而已。
然而，這些資料庫過去並沒有彼此整合、也沒有開放外界取用的途徑，所以想歸想，真的要做還是得自己來。不過隨著年事漸長，建檔案的速度和恆心卻追不上庫存的成長，所以總是功敗垂成。
反過來說，如果有人能解決輸入麻煩、重複使用現有資料這兩個問題，也許就可以成為一套實用的藏書管理系統。如果再加上最近流行的社交網路功能、並且能夠儘可能囊括中文、英文、日文書籍資料，那就更完美了。
